Department of Social Sciences

Welcome to the webpages of the Department of Social Sciences at Loughborough University. We invite you to browse through the materials presented here which give details of our research and teaching as one of the leading departments in this field within the United Kingdom and internationally. Our innovative research has received international recognition within the social sciences, including the award of the Queen's Anniversary Prize in 2005 for outstanding work at world-class level. All our staff are active in research, and this large Department continues to perform excellently in the national Research Assessment Exercise, indicating the international renown of its scholarship and research. Twenty-five per cent of its research output is officially described as 'world leading.'  When the quality of the research is combined with the volume of its overall output, the Department is ranked fifth in the UK.

This top-class research invigorates all our teaching programmes. At the undergraduate level we run four main programmes: in Sociology, Social Psychology, Communications and Media Studies, and Criminology and Social Policy. Our postgraduate offerings include masters programmes on Social Science Research, Media and Cultural Analysis and Cultural Sociology. We also have a thriving doctoral programme with over seventy full- and part-time postgraduates pursuing research degrees.

We hope you like what you find here. We look forward to hearing from you.
